Berry Scape® Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia)

In spring, clusters of crisp white flowers cover the shrub and attract a wide variety of native bees, butterflies, flower flies, and other beneficial pollinators. By late summer, the berries begin ripening several weeks earlier than traditional red chokeberries, transitioning from green to yellow before developing their brilliant glossy red color. The fruit often persists well into fall, providing food for songbirds and other wildlife.

As temperatures cool, the foliage transforms into shades of red, often coloring earlier than other red chokeberry selections, extending the season of landscape interest. Because of its compact habit and full branching to the ground, Berry Scape® maintains an attractive appearance without developing the sparse lower stems common to older cultivars.

Native chokeberries are among the most valuable shrubs for supporting biodiversity. Their flowers provide nectar and pollen for pollinators, while the fruit and dense branching offer food, cover, and nesting habitat for birds and small mammals. The shrub’s slowly spreading root system also makes it an excellent choice for rain gardens, streambanks, and erosion control.
