Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica) is a unique native tree with high value as an ornamental shade tree for lawns or as a street tree. This species prefers moist soil, and is an ideal candidate for woodland gardens or low spots subject to periodic flooding. This tree is showstopping in the fall, with leaf color ranging from yellow to orange to scarlet to purple. The bark is very distinct, forming blocky, irregular ridges with an almost alligator hide appearance. This tree is dioecious, and requires both a male and female plant for consistent fruit set.
