Black Willow (Salix nigra) is a fast-growing native tree strongly associated with rivers, floodplains, and wetland ecosystems. It thrives in consistently moist to wet soils and is widely recognized for its role in erosion control and shoreline stabilization.

Naturally found along riverbanks, swamps, marshes, sloughs, and pond edges, Black Willow develops an extensive root system that helps hold soil in place during flooding and fluctuating water levels. This makes it an excellent choice for riparian buffers, restoration projects, and large naturalized landscapes.

In early spring, Black Willow produces catkins that provide an important early food source for bees and other pollinators. Reddish-brown fruits follow later in the season, contributing to its value for birds and wildlife. With its broad canopy and rapid growth, Black Willow also functions as a large shade tree in appropriate settings.
