Buckley Oak (Quercus buckleyi) is a medium to small oak native to the southern Great Plains and south-central United States. Closely related to Shumard Oak, Buckley Oak stands out for its excellent heat and drought tolerance and ability to grow in alkaline soils, making it an intriguing oak for challenging Great Plains landscapes.
Glossy, medium-green leaves provide an attractive canopy throughout summer before developing bright red fall color. Its smaller mature stature also makes Buckley Oak worth considering where the size of some of our larger native oaks may be difficult to accommodate.
Like other oaks, Buckley Oak offers significant value to wildlife. Its acorns provide an important food source, while the tree itself contributes valuable habitat and cover for birds and other wildlife.
Our Buckley Oaks are grown from seed collected in Kansas, providing a regional seed source well suited for consideration in Great Plains landscapes.
