Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum)
$40.00
This large tree is known for its showy flowers in May. The clusters of white flowers stand 6 inches tall above the foliage. The leaves are large, palmate, and dark green. Rarely found in woodlands, this tree can be a common site in cemeteries and parks. It has become a collector’s tree as it has become hard to find in the trade.
This tree is non-native – introduced to North America in the 1500’s from Turkey, Greece and Albania. This is not a true chestnut and the nuts are inedible by humans. Nuts ripen in the fall. The husks are green with spikes, but the nut inside is shiny brown.
