Kentucky Coffeetree is a bold, native shade tree known for its coarse branching structure, rugged bark, and striking winter silhouette. Growing 50–60 feet tall and 40–50 feet wide, it develops an open, spreading canopy that creates light, filtered shade in the landscape.
This species is especially valued for its year-round interest. In winter, its deeply furrowed bark and stout, architectural branches stand out, while in summer, its large, bluish-green leaves provide a tropical, airy texture. In fall, foliage turns clear yellow, and long, leathery mahogany seed pods add additional visual interest.
Kentucky Coffeetree prefers deep, moist soils and full sun, but is highly adaptable to a wide range of conditions, including alkaline soils, drought, urban environments, and periodic flooding. This adaptability makes it a strong choice for parks, large residential landscapes, streetscapes, and windbreaks across the Great Plains.
Seed for this selection was collected in Saunders County, Nebraska, and it was recognized as a 2002 GreatPlants® Winner for its durability and landscape performance.
