Leadplant (Amorpha canescens)

Leadplant is a hardy native prairie shrub prized for its purple flower spikes, exceptional drought tolerance, and ecological value. Naturally found in prairies and open grasslands throughout the Great Plains and Midwest, this compact shrub grows 3–4 feet tall and wide, making it an excellent choice for native landscapes, prairie restorations, and water-wise gardens.

From mid- to late summer, Leadplant produces fragrant purple flower spikes with bright orange-yellow stamens that attract a wide variety of native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its finely textured gray-green foliage provides season-long interest and gives the plant its common name.

As a member of the legume family, Leadplant forms a beneficial relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, helping improve soil fertility and making it a valuable species for restoration projects and sustainable landscapes.

Leadplant develops an extensive, deep root system that allows it to thrive in dry, sandy, rocky, and well-drained soils while also making it highly effective for erosion control. Once established, it requires very little supplemental water and is highly resistant to drought.

Leadplant is considered an indicator of healthy prairie ecosystems. Its fragrant flowers support dozens of native pollinator species, while its nitrogen-fixing roots naturally improve soil health—making it one of the most ecologically valuable shrubs for Great Plains landscapes.
