New Jersey Tea is a compact native shrub prized for its abundant white flowers, drought tolerance, and exceptional pollinator value. This adaptable Great Plains native grows just 3–4 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, making it an excellent choice for smaller landscapes, native plant gardens, and prairie-inspired plantings.
In late spring to early summer, New Jersey Tea produces clusters of tiny, fragrant white flowers that attract butterflies, native bees, and other beneficial insects. The blooms stand out against the shrub’s dark green foliage and provide an important nectar source during the growing season.
Beneath the soil, New Jersey Tea develops an extensive root system that helps it withstand drought and adapt to challenging sites. Once established, it performs exceptionally well in dry, sandy, rocky, and well-drained soils, making it a valuable addition to water-wise landscapes.
Historically, the leaves were used as a tea substitute during the American Revolution, giving rise to the common name “New Jersey Tea.”
