Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa)

Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa) is a majestic native evergreen valued for its towering form, durability, and adaptability to challenging soils typical of Great Plains landscapes. Native to the mountainous West and northwestern Nebraska, it reaches up to 100 feet tall with a 20–30 foot spread, forming a broad–crowned specimen that anchors windbreaks, large properties, and naturalized settings.

Long needles in bundles of 2–3 and distinctive cones with sharp umbones give Ponderosa Pine strong visual character. As it matures, lower branches naturally shed, leaving a graceful, open trunk topped by a rounded canopy — a classic silhouette in open landscapes.

Ponderosa Pine performs best on well-drained, coarse soils, such as sand, loamy sand, and gravels. It handles heat and solar exposure better than many other pines and is drought tolerant once established. It struggles in poorly drained, heavy clay soils, but its soil preference makes it an excellent choice for dry uplands, sandy ridges, and windbreaks, where it can thrive without excessive moisture and resist stress common to Great Plains sites.

Ponderosa Pine also provides important wildlife habitat, offering shelter and food sources for birds and mammals, and is recognized as the 2016 GreatPlants Evergreen of the Year for its performance and landscape value.
