Prairie Willow (Salix humilis) is a compact, native willow shrub with an outsized ecological impact. Growing just 3–4 feet tall and wide, it’s an ideal choice for home landscapes, restoration projects, and conservation plantings where space is limited but habitat value is a priority.
In early spring, Prairie Willow produces inconspicuous but highly valuable catkins that bloom before most plants leaf out. These early blooms provide critical nectar and pollen for specialist native bees, including ground-nesting miner bees that emerge very early in the season. This timing makes Prairie Willow an important keystone species in Great Plains ecosystems.
Prairie Willow performs well in both wet and dry conditions, thriving in full sun and adapting to a range of soils. Its rounded form and grayish-green foliage offer a soft, natural look through the growing season, followed by golden yellow fall color.
