Red Pine is a durable, native evergreen valued for its dense growth, strong structure, and excellent windbreak performance. Its broad, pyramidal shape and consistent branching make it an ideal choice for screens, shelterbelts, and multi-row windbreaks across the Great Plains and Midwest.
Growing 50–75 feet tall and 15–20 feet wide, Red Pine develops a uniform, upright form with attractive reddish-brown, scaly bark that gives the tree its name. Its blue-green needles provide year-round color and protection, helping reduce wind, control snow drift, and improve landscape resilience.
Red Pine performs best in well-drained soils and is particularly well-suited to dry or sandy locations. While adaptable, it should not be planted in poorly drained or excessively moist soils, where performance may decline.
This hardy evergreen is an excellent addition to diverse windbreak plantings, where it can be combined with other evergreens, deciduous trees, and shrubs to improve long-term resilience and reduce risk from pests or disease.
