Shantung Maple is a small understory tree that reaches up to 25′ high and 20′ wide that is native to China, Manchuria and Korea. It can tolerate many conditions including drought, heat, occasional flooding and alkaline soils. It also tolerates clay soils and road salt which makes it a great tree to use in urban conditions. It prefers average, medium, well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. The foliage emerges a reddish purple in the spring and turns a glossy green in summer followed by yellow and orange with some red in the fall.
