Wavecrest Siebold Viburnum (Viburnum sieboldii ‘Wavecrest’) is an uncommon large deciduous shrub or small ornamental tree prized for its bold glossy foliage, creamy-white flowers, abundant red berries, and burgundy fall color. Growing approximately 15–20 feet tall, Wavecrest can develop into a substantial rounded shrub or be limbed up and trained as a single-stem small tree.
What distinguishes ‘Wavecrest’ from the species is its larger, thicker foliage. New leaves emerge dark red in spring before maturing to glossy dark green with distinctly toothed edges, giving the plant a bold texture throughout the growing season.
Clusters of creamy-white flowers appear in May, followed by abundant red fruits later in the season. The colorful fruit adds another ornamental season while providing a valuable food source for birds. In fall, the shiny green foliage develops attractive burgundy color.
Wavecrest grows in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It also tolerates alkaline soils, an especially useful characteristic in landscapes where higher soil pH can limit plant selection. Because it is moderately sensitive to drought, it is better suited to locations with reliable moisture than to hot, dry landscape sites.
Its combination of size and flexible form makes Wavecrest useful as a specimen, screen, large hedge, understory plant, or small ornamental tree.
