Mr. Poppins® Winterberry is a compact male winterberry holly grown specifically to pollinate compatible female winterberries, including Berry Poppins® and Berry Heavy®. It does not produce berries itself. Instead, its flowers provide the pollen female plants need to develop their showy crops of red berries.
Growing approximately 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, Mr. Poppins® has a compact, tidy habit that makes it easy to incorporate into the landscape without competing visually with the female winterberries planted for their fruit.
In late spring to early summer, small white flowers provide the pollen needed by compatible female plants blooming at the same time. One Mr. Poppins® can pollinate up to five compatible female winterberries when planted within approximately 50 feet.
Like other cultivars of our native winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata), Mr. Poppins® is particularly well suited to moist landscapes, rain gardens, wildlife plantings, and areas with seasonally wet soil.
